Buddy’s Key is a crucial item for the “Find Emmy” quest in Divinity: Original Sin 2. After receiving it from Buddy the Dog, players often find themselves confused about how to use it. This guide will explain in detail how to obtain the key and complete the quest in Act I.
How to get Buddy’s key in DOS 2
To get started, you need a character with the Animal Friend talent . Find Buddy, the black dog , at the entrance to the caves in Joy’s Fortress.

Talk to him by choosing the following dialogue options:
- Ask what’s the matter.
- Tell them you can help.
- Ask if his sadness is related to Emmy.
- Scratch behind the ear.
Buddy will run to a small pond, dig up some water, and leave you “Buddy’s Key .” Pick it up and talk to the dog again. He’ll tell you that the key was dropped by a white-robed magister who took his friend Emmy. This will initiate the “Find Emmy” quest.
Important: Buddy won’t talk if Black Cat is following you . To get around this, take the cat further away (for example, to Griff’s camp) with one of your companions, then untie him and approach Buddy with a character who has “Animal Friend.”
How to use Buddy’s Key (Search for Emmy)
Buddy’s key opens a locked door on the main floor of Joy’s Fortress , where four Source Dogs stand. One of them is Emmy.

Open the door with the key. Bruno, the Istok-dog, will speak to you. To complete the quest, choose in the dialogue:
- Look closely at the dog named Emmy and ask if she knows the old dog Buddy.
- To say that Buddy misses her very much.
This will complete the quest and earn you 2,200 experience . For a maximum, you can then kill the Source Dogs, earning another 125 experience for each ( 2,700 total ). This won’t fail the quest.
Alternative method: If you have a Shiny Red Ball in your inventory (found on the Dog Trainer in the basement of the fortress), when talking to Bruno, the option to throw the ball will appear. The dogs will become non-aggressive, and the quest will be completed, but the dialogue about Buddy will be skipped.
Returning to Buddy, you can report that you found Emmy alive. Unfortunately, the couple cannot be reunited—one will always remain on the beach, and the other in the fort.
Important note: If you removed the Source Collar or escaped Joy’s Fortress , all Source Dogs will immediately become hostile when you open the door. To avoid combat, have a companion who still has the collar, who hasn’t completed the escape, and who also has the Animal Friend talent approach them.
